#1. From zero to billing one million euros. Let’s start!

The other day, I published this tweet where I talked about reaching a million and sent it to Elsa —my battle partner in Overtracking— on WhatsApp.

I might have been a little extra, but if we don’t set difficult goals, we don’t achieve anything”, I told her.

Elsa replied: “Hell, yes! We have to think big! It is also good viral content and it is useful as a storyline to send weekly emails. I think it’s a good idea.”

When Elsa told me that, I knew there was no going back. It was time to align goals, focus, and try to take this from zero to a million euros.

In my previous company, Publisuites, it took me three years to achieve it. I started from scratch, without any funds, and did bootstrapping from the first moment. After getting the first million, nine more arrived. I worked hard in Publisuites from 2014 to December 2021 when I finally sold it. That year alone, we invoiced almost 3 million euros.

In this case the business model changes, from a marketplace to a SaaS. Before, we made our way into a market without large competitors and a smaller market size. Now, we will compete against giants, with a lot of money available and many players wanting to get their piece of the pie.

And the truth is that more than scaring me, it seems like a hell of a challenge to me. And I love it.

I don’t know how long it will take us to get there, a year, five… Maybe we will never get it. But I think there is a 10% chance of getting it, and is more than enough to try.

I believe that web analytics tools are either powerful and complex to use or they are simple and not powerful enough to truly boost an online business. I think there is room for a solution like Overtracking, and I will fight to try to put it on the map.

“Nihil difficile volenti”—nothing is impossible for who has will. I got this phrase tattooed in 2015; it remains my life motto.

How are we going to do it?

  1. Create a product that delivers on our promises. Words alone aren’t enough. We’ll build the easiest-to-use alternative to Google Analytics, but also the most powerful. It will offer deep data analysis, and the ability to create no-code objectives, heatmaps, user session recordings, and more, with and without cookies.
  2. Build trust. Transparency is the key to this project. We’ll build in public, and the data will always belong to our users. 100%. They can take all their data with them if they want to leave tomorrow.
  3. Generate word-of-mouth. To get our first 10,000 users, we’ll focus on this area. And for them to talk about us, we’ll have to talk first. So Elsa and I will contact thousands of people in the next four months.
  4. Focus on Overtracking. I’ll have to delegate most of my other projects and focus on Overtracking. The only thing I’ll continue doing is writing on The Open Projects because it’s something I love and consider a hobby (even though it pays me a monthly salary).
  5. Integrate with other platforms and tools. We have our API available for all premium Overtracking users, and we’ll connect to other APIs to offer even more data (Looker Studio, Search Console, Adsense, Ads, etc.).
  6. Make migration easy. We’ll soon make it possible to migrate statistics from GA4, Plausible, Matomo, and others to Overtracking.
  7. Provide the best support in Spanish and English. What sets us apart from GA4 is that we have someone who will respond to you in less than 24 hours.

Next monday, I’ll send you the next post.

Talk to you soon,

Mario
